Meatless Montreal: Palais D’Ajit – Not to be missed!

If you’re looking for the best Indian food in Montreal, look no further!  To paraphrase MC Hammer: Ajit is too legit, too legit to quit! I’m talking about Palais D’Ajit / Ajit Palace.  Named after the chef himself, this family-run restaurant is serving up some of the best Indian food Montreal has to offer. There is no beating price and quality, especially when you consider that you can bring your own wine (or beer). This place rivals many of the beloved Indian restaurants on Jean-Talon in Montreal’s “Little India.” For a South-Westers, not having to trek across the mountain to get mouthwatering Indian food with BYOB privileges is wonderful. If you don’t live in Verdun, jump on the Metro and exit at the Verdun station, just three minutes away. The service and ambiance is nothing to write home about but it’s good enough when you consider the volume of clients and the low price point. It’s a small operation with Ajit’s wife and daughter behind the cash trying to keep up with endless bills to ring up. They are closed on Mondays but every other week it’s business as usual.

Restrictions: It’s not a vegetarian restaurant but they lots of vegetarian options and vegan ones too. Vegans/Lactose intolerants: Ask to make sure the veg dishes do not contain butter or yogurt which are commonly used in Indian cuisine. The staff are very accommodating but sometimes communicating your needs are tricky because of language barriers. Be patient.

Dress code: Super casual
Price: $8-25 per person

My favourite meatless choices include:

Baigan Bharta
Palak Paneer
Veg Pakoras

Bon appetit!

In an effort to keep blogging despite my busy work schedule, I’ll be posting short weekly #MeatlessMontreal highlights. These are brief posts highlighting one of my favourite establishments in Montreal. The establishments range from vegetarian-friendly to fully vegan so there is a little bit for everyone. I only talk about places absolutely love, nothing is sponsored.
